This animal lived in the forested areas of North America, first appearing about 15 million years ago. It was adapted to conifers forests and marshes. This was right after the ice age, so the mastodon retains a mammoth look.

The people that found the fossil were professor Dave Thomas, teacher Jeff Bradley, and their students. This became the state fossil because it is one of the most complete mastodon fossils ever found, with 95% of it's bones intact.
